The interview was successful and they were asked to return in a week's time for the final screening and letter of approval.

She already started compiling an endless list of how the money would be spent. Upon returning from the trip, I noticed she didn’t return with her Personal Computer – I summoned courage to ask about it and she began the long tale of how she had to leave back her PC based on the firm’s demand of it.

They were told they would require a software installed on their computers – which would take about 24 hours to be completely installed and activated.

She could have stayed back to come with it but she thought about missing another week at work as well as the scheduled visit of supervisors from the school the next day.

Since they would still be back the following week, she just concluded that leaving it behind won’t be a big deal at all.

I immediately smelt something fishy – nursing a probable thought of trickery with leverage on their j but I quickly overcame that by congratulating her for the progress made so far.

The departure of our supervisors the next day drew the curtains for the day’s activities as we all retired to our hostels.
I noticed the discordant expression on her face and immediately asked what was not right.

‘Could you believe that I have been trying to get across to the firm to ascertain the completion of the activation? It’s over 24 hours now, she said.’

'Oh! But that should not really be an issue. It might just be network issues. The line might be out of coverage.'

‘I don’t think so. The line had been switched off for hours now.’

'Flat battery!' I was trying hard not to entertain the possibilities of having been duped. But from all indications, that seem to be the obvious situation at hand.

‘Have you tried Olaide’s line too?’

‘Yes, I have. She complained about the same thing too. She’s been trying to reach them.’

It was then she started doling out details about the contract. They have been asked to pay an amount as processing fee, which they could not put together at that instance, hence, giving up Olaide’s ‘Big’ phone to be sold to cover the expenses. They had both emptied their accounts. I was not still much perturbed until I asked about the firm’s address.

‘We don’t have their address. The interview was held at different locations off their building for some privacy purposes,’ they said.

Olaide was lodged in a hotel the previous night before I joined them that Monday morning. The interview was conducted with two other female applicants present.

‘So, how do you trace them?’

‘They gave out their contact.’

Just contact? And that’s not reachable now. It was then I was certain that the smart guys had simply leveraged on their juvenescence. The expression on her face affirmed my conclusions as well as called for a shoulder to lean on.

I affectionately supplied that and consoled her as she lamented.

‘We only wanted to ease our parents of the burden of having to provide everything she said sobbing.’

I know! Your prospect was right.
