(Episode 42) LOVE AFFAIRS | A novel of the OmidanWURA_files By Segun Alonge Jr

The exams were over but we were both still in school awaiting project defense. Hers came before mine.

Another outreach organized by Opeyemi Daniels was now around the corner. It was certain that I won’t be able to go with her again as my research work was still underway – let alone defending it.

The program was scheduled to hold from Thursday all through to Sunday. So, I promised to join them latest by Friday evening or at most, Saturday morning.

My project supervisor fixed a meeting for Saturday morning. I could not complain because she was coming to school for no other reason than to support me in speeding up my write up. We were together in school all day.

I got a message across to Ayomi to explain the situation at hand and her response was, ‘I knew you would not come’. That met me on a sad note. I wondered why she won’t see things from my perspective. She had successfully completed what I was still battling with. I soon got that off my mind.

Things never remained the same when she came back. She withdrew completely. I have learnt how to cope with that so it didn’t really get to me. It was to me, once beaten, many times wise.

I was flowing really well with the new development. I resolved that she would be the party to apologize for the withdrawal this time. I had always been the one to plead for a comeback.

Unknown to me, she already had plans to finally return home. The initial plan was to accompany her home due to her much luggage. She had moved her luggage over to my place – since my hostel was closer to the motor park.

When I couldn’t bear the long silence anymore, I swallowed my pride. I resolved to do that in a special way. I contacted a specialist at cake baking and placed an order for a cake on which would be written, ‘I’m sorry’. I soon had to eat my cake alone.

I was sitting in bed with a book in hand when I got a knock on my door. It was Ayomi. She went straight to where her luggage was and started pulling them out – about four boxes – without uttering a word. I sat quietly as I watched her drama. When she was done with that, she came back into the room and said she was set for home.

I was so stunned that all I could say was, ‘Alright’. I didn’t move an inch from where I was sitting. The prior plan was that we  travel together – so, why the sudden change of plans without my prior notice?
A cake would soon be delivered the next day to apologize for her faults. I could not believe my eyes.

I watched as she tried pulling the bags one after the other. When she saw that it was impossible, she dialed someone’s line – and shortly, a colleague appeared from heaven knows where.

He was one of those who had tried times without number to win her love. So, she could still easily manipulate him. The fatuous boy gladly came and immediately picked up two big boxes.

He came over to where I was seated for a handshake which I hesitantly accepted. He knew so well that we were engaged but his instinct could not tell him that he came to the wrong environment at the wrong time. He picked the boxes and off they went – I carefully watched the drama.
