THE WOMAN.....THE DRAGON
‘Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun...’ ‘And another sign appeared in heaven: behold a great, fiery red dragon...’ Revelation 12: 1, 3
Signs! Signs! Images! Images!
I often like to bring people’s notice when discussing the revealed mysteries in this book thus truth – they were visions revealed to a man, so, he could only express whatever he sees with his knowledge of people, places, things, events.
The questions now are: Who is this woman? What about the child, and the dragon? Let’s consider the text closely with some submissions from bible scholars. Sit back and relax!
A quick contrast of this woman with the woman in the seventeenth chapter clearly points to us that she is saintly and the latter is filthy. She was clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars while the other woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.
The women can be interpreted to be two great nations – Israel (Good) and Babylon (Evil).
Another interpretation relates the account with the scene in the Garden of Eden - The woman, the child (the seed) and the serpent (dragon). A quick trip from Genesis to the Gospels explains this account with the pregnancy of Mary, the opposition and attempt of murder from Pharoah – Mary carrying the seed that was prophesied to bruise the head of the serpent.
As I often like to opine, if the bruising is properly done, which was completed once and for all in the person of Christ, the serpent would not even be able to raise its head let alone bruise the woman’s heel.
The twelve stars on her head can also symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel. She is pictured as a married woman in labour, about to give birth to a faithful Jewish remnant. In pain, indicates the remnant’s agony throughout Jewish history.
The red Dragon is identified as that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to earth. From the beginning, the obsession of the Dragon has been to thwart the purpose of God being worked out through the Messiah, her child.
The child was born anyways, a male child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron (firmness not tyranny) and he was caught up to God after filling the gap (death, burial and resurrection).
CHRIST AT THE CENTRE OF IT ALL!
ETERNAL VICTORY
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb
And by the word of their testimony
And they did not love their lives to the death”
Revelation 12:11
